Gayaka = the art of vocal expression in two traditions of Indian Music
The human voice lies at the heart of Indian classical music. This special double bill brings together its two great traditions: Carnatic music from South India and Hindustani music from North India.
Carnatic vocalist Spoorthi Rao, joined by traditional accompaniment, opens the evening with the intricate melodic and rhythmic language of South Indian classical music.
In the second half, award-winning sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun, joined by tabla, explores the Hindustani tradition. Trained in the Imdadkhani gharana’s gayaki ang — an approach in which the sitar emulates the nuance, expression and fluidity of the human voice — Jasdeep reveals an instrumental tradition rooted deeply in song.
Presented in partnership with South Asian Arts UK and Opera North
