A Tribute in Song: Leeds Song Celebrates Kathleen Evans BEM’s Remarkable Contribution

On Friday 19 June, Leeds Song gathered artists, supporters and friends for a very special concert honouring Kathleen Evans, who will stand down as Chair in July after decades of extraordinary service to the organisation.

The recital, held at Leeds Conservatoire, was curated entirely by Kathleen and performed by mezzo‑soprano Dame Sarah Connolly alongside Leeds Song’s Artistic Director, Joseph Middleton. Together, they presented a programme that travelled across the full spectrum of the song repertoire — a reflection not only of Kathleen’s wide‑ranging musical passions but also of the artistic ambition she has championed throughout her tenure.

As a gesture of thanks for her leadership, generosity and unwavering belief in the power of song, colleagues, supporters and friends (past and present) contributed towards the commissioning of a new song cycle by the distinguished composer David Matthews. This new work, written especially in Kathleen’s honour, will stand as a lasting testament to her impact on the organisation and on the wider musical life of the North.

Kathleen first joined Leeds Song in 2008 as Administrator, before joining the Board in 2014 and later being appointed Chair in 2017. Over that time, she has helped guide the charity through periods of growth, transition and artistic evolution, always with a steady hand and a deep commitment to nurturing song and those who perform it.

During the recital, Joseph Middleton paid tribute to Kathleen’s exceptional contribution, remarking that Leeds Song “simply wouldn’t exist without the tireless efforts instilled by Kathleen,” and that “the musical landscape in the North of England is all the better for it.”

From July 2026, Michael Chance CBE will take over as Chair of Leeds Song, continuing the strong leadership that Kathleen has embodied throughout her tenure.

Leeds Song owes an immense debt of gratitude to Kathleen. Her vision, dedication and belief in the organisation have shaped its identity and ensured its place as one of the UK’s leading champions of song. As she prepares to step down as Chair, the entire Leeds Song community celebrates her legacy — one built on generosity, artistry and an unshakeable love of music.
